FNRPG Playtest #3

(originally posted 2/24/24 on Facebook)

Here are some notes from Friday Playtest #3:

  1. The night started off with some brief roleplaying (one player really excels at this), and we got a little backstory. Also, the beastmaster in the group has his first beast: a giant frog.

  2. The party was faced with the first "optional" combat of the adventure module, and they decided that they should play it safe and avoid the combat.

  3. The party had opportunities to use non-combat skills, such as Search. I might have to adjust the Challenge Level for these skills, as the search they conducted seemed a little harder than it should have been.

  4. They encountered their first environmental hazard (smoke). It ended up not being an issue, but it could have been if they'd decided to spend more time searching.

  5. We went over the fluid nature of initiative order in combat, and they all seem to grasp how recharge times after taking actions works. This came into play when they encountered the "boss" of the module, a monster a couple of levels higher than the party members. Starting initiative put the monster first, and then the various party members got to act. A couple of them took actions faster than the monster's, resulting in their getting to act more than once before the monster's second turn. Unfortunately, we ran out of time for this session, so we'll pick up with combat in medias rem next week.

I'm open to running a couple of more playtest groups, and hopefully I can get those up and running soon!
